There’s simply nothing quite as exquisite as Kill Bill. It’s a marathon, spread across two films and four hours, with a sophisticated storyline, impeccable acting, and the incomparable cinematography of Quentin Tarantino.

The leading lady is Uma Thurman as the Bride (later revealed to be Beatrix Kiddo), whose codename is Black Mamba. She is a member of Bill’s Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, and said to be the most dangerous woman in the world. At the beginning of the duology, the Bride awakes from a coma, having been shot four years earlier by Bill, whilst pregnant, and left to die. She is disturbed to find she is no longer pregnant, and decides to take revenge by murdering Bill and the four other members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad.

In the first instalment, the Bride is trying to discover more information regarding Bill’s whereabouts, and dispatches two of her targets. In one of the most iconic sequences of the movie, the Bride journeys to Japan, acquires a weapon from a legendary swordsmith, and manages to annihilate a restaurant full of guards, before engaging in a final showdown within a snow-laden garden terrace.

In the second film, we learn more about Bill and the Bride’s combined background, and uncover one particularly life-changing secret. 3 Casino Royale Release Date:
2006

Country:
UK, Czech Republic, USA, Germany, Bahamas, Italy

Director:
Martin Campbell

Cast:
Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright, Judi Dench, Caterina Murino, Simon Abkarian, Giancarlo Giannini, Isaach De Bankolé, Ivana Milicevic, Jesper Christensen, Tobias Menzies, Sebastien Foucan
When Daniel Craig was announced as the new Bond in 2006, the appointment was met with a mixed response, to put it mildly. However, Casino Royale turned out to be precisely the refresh that the franchise desperately required. Craig’s incantation of Bond feels more real, with human frailties and a depth that had been absent from the bravado-laden Bonds of old. The action itself is thrilling and beautifully-filmed, and beneath the surface is a deeply emotional current, that captivates the audience and creates a lasting connection.

The story itself centres on Bond’s attempt to apprehend the terrorist financier, Le Chiffre, who has made a high-stakes bet on the failure of an aerospace company, Skyfleet. Le Chiffre has arranged for Skyfleet’s newest aeroplane to be destroyed during a demonstration, but Bond intervenes to prevent it. Le Chiffre loses a vast sum of money, and sets up a game of poker at Montengro’s Casino Royale to recoup his loss.

Bond receives begrudging approval from M to join the game, in order to win and force Le Chiffre to hand himself over to MI6. Vesper Lynd joins Bond, as custodian of the British government’s investment in the game, and soon finds her duties extending beyond the job description.

From the beautiful title sequence right through to the final credits, Casino Royale is a exhilarating return to form for the beloved 007.
4 The Bourne Ultimatum Release Date:
2007

Country:
USA, Germany, France, Spain

Director:
Paul Greengrass

Cast:
Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney, Paddy Considine, Joan Allen, Edgar Ramírez, Daniel Brühl, Tom Gallop, Corey Johnson, Joey Ansah, Colin Stinton
The Bourne series is gilded within the genre. It’s a series characterised by compelling characters, intricate storylines, and daring action sequences. As such, selecting the best of the bunch is a contentious issue. On balance, it has to be the third instalment; The Bourne Ultimatum. Building upon the first two films, 2007’s outing seeks to delve deeper into the history of Jason Bourne, and how his experiences have informed his character.

The Bourne Ultimatum also contains a fantastic storyline in its own right. We meet Bourne directly after the events of The Bourne Supremacy, having been shot and wounded in Moscow by Kirill. He goes into hiding, then travels to Paris to deliver the news of his girlfriend Marie’s passing to her brother, Martin Kreutz. Whilst experiencing flashbacks of his experiences in Operation Treadstone, Bourne realises he is being tracked by the CIA.

Alongside British journalist Simon Ross, Bourne is forced to confront his background, and the events that led to him transforming from David Webb into his current alias, whilst avoiding the CIA operatives out to neutralise him. The Bourne Ultimatum is a must-see for action fans, although it’s certainly advisable to watch the previous instalments first.

An action-packed story that will get the adrenaline pumping. In fact, that’s pretty crucial to the whole premise!

Chelios is an LA-based hitman, working for a crime boss named Carlito. Chelios is sent by Carlito to kill rival mafia boss, Don Kim. After Chelios completes the job, he is confronted by a wannabe don, Verona, his brother Alex, and several goons. In the melee, Chelios is injected with a Chinese serum that drains the adrenaline from his body, which will eventually stop his heart.

He calls the mafia doctor, who tells him that he needs to keep his adrenaline levels elevated, by engaging in risky, irresponsible, and promiscuous behaviour. Although an antidote doesn’t appear to exist, Chelios takes advantage of the advice, and puts himself in increasingly reckless situations.

When Chelios goes to Carlito for help, he discovers that Carlito is working with Verona, and that his own death will be used by Carlito as an excuse to have another pop at his rivals. Chelios is furious, and decides to exact revenge on both Carlito and Verona. An unexpected arrival gives Chelios a lifeline, and a battle royale ensues. With Chelios’ life hanging in the balance, can he find an antidote?

Crank does require the viewer to suspend their belief in reality, but that doesn’t take away from what is a very entertaining movie with a compelling storyline.

Dewey and Gilleece, the two engineers, are instructed to drive alongside the train and find a way to stop it. However, they soon notice that it is running on full power, and is practically uncontrollable.

Unfortunately, this plan fails, and the train continues to barrel towards a section of the track named ‘Devil’s Curve’ – which, as we’re sure you can imagine, doesn’t exactly bode well!

It is decided, reluctantly, that the best course of action is to induce a derailment that’s as controlled as possible, although the consequences still have the potential to be catastrophic. action movie

What makes a great action movie?

When thinking about your favourite action movies, which elements stand out? We’ve compiled the top five features of a great action movie. Let’s dive in!

1. Story
Like all movie genres, a good action film requires a decent story; there’s no point in throwing explosions at a poor idea. A story must be rich, well-developed, and understandable. Some action movies suffer from an oversaturated plot; too much going on and insufficient explanation. Instead, writers and directors must ease the audience into the world they have created, and reveal the narrative without adding any unnecessary complexity. Otherwise, the audience is in danger of walking out, or falling asleep!

2. Characters
For an action film to be successful, the audience must be able to identify with the leading character(s). Most leads within this genre take on the role of a hero; even if they are the most stone-cold killer known to cinema, there should be an aspect of their personality that makes them human. A frailty needn’t be a weakness; it’s simply a doorway to a greater connection between the audience and a character.

3. Stunts
In action films, one must go big or go home! Whilst the story and characters are crucial components, stunts serve as the embellishment; the cherry on top, if you will. Action movie creators are tasked with producing a sensory experience that takes the audience on an adventure. It should be visually exhilarating, with a soundtrack and effects that enhance the film without stifling it. Stunts should be daring and audacious, but not overdone.

4. Pacing
Action movies generally have relatively complicated narratives. There are several components to address simultaneously, and it can be a challenge to tie up all the loose ends within a feature-length timeline. That’s why the pacing of the story should be given due consideration. There have been plenty of action films with great promise that failed to deliver simply due to a pacing problem. The key is to keep the audience on their toes, but know when to provide a little breathing space.

5. Suspense
A great action film thrives on suspense. Experienced directors know how to build narrative layers to provide a thrill to the audience. But it’s important to make them work for it; there’s an art to building suspense, and the best action movies will put the audience through the wringer before any resolution is provided.
